Painting Tip #25 - Paint Shapes

Remember that you are not painting objects, you are painting shapes. If you get the right shape in the right color and the right value, your painting will portray your subject!

That's completely right. When I paint objects, my work is a lot less fun and seldom ends up looking like anything I want to see (or even have seen). Painting shapes is liberating. In reality we don't see objects. We see shapes which we've named and conceptualized so we can recognize them later. I find in painting a big difference between reality and my concept of it. That's why I've come to view painting as a kind of seeing.
